Michele Lang | Tierra Verde Handmade Soaps

Meet Michele Lang, owner of Tierra Verde Handmade Soaps
Handmade in Lubbock, Texas

Michele, give us a little background about yourself.
I’m a wife, mom, and a self proclaimed soap nerd with an entrepreneurial spirit-living in Lubbock Texas, (a place best known for our expansive horizon, cotton, and as the birth place of Buddy Holly.) I guess you might say I’ve got a serious addiction to all things soap related.

What inspired you to begin Tierra Verde Handmade Soaps?
The soap making seed was planted about three years ago and it’s been growing and blooming ever since. I love so much about it; the ingredients, the science, the daily discovery, the unknown and oh, did I mention the ingredients are to die for? I love that the ingredients are things like honey, clay, botanicals, olive oil, various milks and essential oils – all lovely earthy things.

How are Tierra Verde Handmade Soaps made?
My style is always to use the cold process method of soapmaking. Cold Process means that the oils are not subjected to external heat (the only heat comes from a chemical reaction called saponification.) The texture of cold process seems to me like the finest texture and quality of soap. I also favor more natural colorants such as clays, activated charcoal or sometimes; just the color the oils themselves provide.

Of all your soaps; do you have a favorite?
One of my favorite soaps that I make is-“Orange Honey Drizzle with Oats-A generous drizzle of aromatic Citrus Honey and Sweet Orange essential oil mingle with hand ground colloidal oats; this wholesome soap is like breakfast for your skin.” I think it exemplifies my style and what I like about soap. It’s wholesome and real, it looks beautiful, it smells wonderful and it makes your skin feel amazing.

What is your business philosophy?
My philosophy is about keeping it simple. You won't find superfluous ingredients or fancy packaging in an effort to make a product seem like something it isn't. You will find wholesome high quality products created from simple pure ingredients that are familiar, skin nourishing and friendly to our earth.

What does Tierra Verde mean?
Tierra Verde is Spanish for Green Earth
